Dear all,

Thanks in advance for sharing this call with anyone who might be interested.

Best wishes,
Alessio

I am looking for 2 PhD students interested in doing interdisciplinary
research in neuromorphic engineering, control theory and/or neuroscience.

Positions are funded by the FNRS WEL-T starting grant *Embodied
Excitability: a design principle for neuromorphic adaptive agents*. This
project is part of the newly born Neuromorphic Engineering Lab of the
University of Liege, including a cleanroom, haptic robotics (Shadow
Dexterous Hand, robotic arms), collective robotics (Turtlebots), 3D
printing, laser cutting, and a soon-to-come wet lab (dense MEA-based
brain-on-chip, in collaboration with *imec*, Leuven) facilities.

Some examples of research directions in which students can work are:
- Adaptive decision-making for sensing and acting: design of robust and
tunable neuromorphic layers for flexible sensorimotor loops.
- Neuromorphic in-sensor fusion.
- Decision-making and time perception in biological neural networks:
analysis of primate electrophysiological data during perceptual
decision-making and time perception tasks.
- Design of new experiments to explore the closed-loop interaction of
biological (cultured) and neuromorphic neural networks.

Students will have the possibility to collaborate with the Microsys group
of the University of Liege (led by Jean-Michel Redouté), with the other
members of the Neuromorphic Engineering lab, with the cognitive
electrophysiology lab of Roman Rossi-Pool at the National Autonomous
University of Mexico (UNAM - Mexico City), as well as with collaborators in
Europe (Leuven, Zurich), UK (Cambridge), and USA (Princeton, Brandeis).

Requirements for applying to this call are passion for interdisciplinary
research and team-working, and a solid background in one or more of the
following fields: neuromorphic engineering, control theory,
microelectronics, physics, neuroscience, applied mathematics.

Scholarships are for 4 years (with various ways to be extended, if needed)
and can start at any time. Students will be supported by a comfortable
research and travel budget.

Interested students can contact me by email directly.
